2 1/3 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
5 tbs unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 tsp anise seeds, crushed
1 tsp finely grated lemon zest
1 large egg
1 large egg yolk
1 tbs sugar
Whisk flour, baking powder and salt together in a small bowl.
In a large bowl with an electric mixer beat butter and shortening together until creamy. Add sugar. Then beat in anise seeds and zest. Add whole egg and then yolk, beating well after each. Gradually add flour mixing until blended.
Form dough, cover in plastic wrap and put in fridge until firm enough to roll or cut.
Preheat oven to 375 and line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
Roll or cut dough into 1/8 inch thickness. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top.
Bake until golden brown around the edges, about 10 minutes.
